This rich, creamy blue cheese comes from a small farm in the verdant region of Empordà, north of Barcelona. Mild yet aromatic, the creaminess of this artisan cheese is unmistakable. Serve with a glass of sparkling Cava and fresh bread.
Muntanyola cheeses are lovingly made at Ca l'Urpina, a farm located at the food of the Massís de Montserrat mountains. The goats, sheep and water buffalo wander freely on the farm, eating wild grasses and herbs. Their fresh milk is transformed into award-winning cheeses within hours after milking.
Muntanyola buffalo blue cheese was named 'best artisanal cheese' at the Gourmet Cheeses of Madrid 2016, Lactium d'Or 2016 and won the Silver Medal at the 2016 World Cheese Awards for the best blue. The buffalo milk of the Empordà has a high content of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus, and a high energy value. The interior of the cheese is a yellowish white color with a subtle blue veining.
Muntanyola employs people with intellectual disabilities to run their small gift shop. They are proud to collaborate with AMPANS, a leading advocate for the disabled.
