La Tienda, based in Williamsburg, Virginia, announced today that it is converting its restaurant location at 1325 Jamestown Road into a community kitchen beginning this weekend. La Tienda will offer a set menu on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 4-7pm. Clients are asked to “Pay What They Can” and no one will be turned away. Payment is by electronic means only, no cash, and the meals will be packaged for take-out only. La Tienda is working under the umbrella of the World Central Kitchen, a world-wide effort led by Chef José Andrés to provide hot meals to people in need during times of crisis.
La Tienda’s chef and restaurant operator Greg Mincher is overseeing the effort with a small crew. “During these difficult times, we are glad we are able to provide hot meals to those in need. We are grateful to be able to serve this community that has been so supportive of us over the years. World Central Kitchen gave us a great model to follow.” Chef Mincher and his team will be following and enforcing strict sanitary guidelines to safeguard his team and his clients. The days and hours of operation may change, according to the need.
Tim Harris, CEO of La Tienda, has been working with José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen to organize the effort. “WCK continues to be a bright light during dark times and José’s vision and model is effective and has impact. Once our community kitchen is established, we plan to provide hot meals to some of the more than 400 children in our Williamsburg community who currently live in hotels and motels. For many of these children school lunch was their only real meal of the day.”
La Tienda is a family-owned business established in 1996 and based in Williamsburg, Virginia. The company imports food items from small producers in Spain and offers them through www.latienda.com and select retailers.
