Horchata de Chufa is one of Spain's most famous drinks. You might call it Valencia's version of the milkshake! Made of ground chufa nuts grown in the Valle de Nito in Spain, horchata is sweet and refreshing with a touch of lemon and cinnamon. Serve very well chilled.

Horchata is the signature beverage of Valencia. From the festival of Las Fallas in mid-March and on through the summer, horchata is the drink of choice for Valencians of all ages. It is common to see whole families gathered outside of an 'horchateria' enjoying this cool, refreshing drink.

Mercader uses local chufa nuts and cane sugar to make the most authentic packaged horchata de chufa we have tasted. Horchata de chufa is a Mediterranean product, not to be confused with Mexican horchata, which is made of rice rather than chufa nuts (also called tigernuts).

There is no refrigeration needed to store this horchata, so you can keep it on your pantry shelf until you are ready to serve it. Then place it in the fridge until well chilled before serving - some prefer to keep it in the freezer until partially frozen for a refreshing icy drink! Shake well before serving and store for up to 3 days after opening.

As with many other foods in Spain, it was the Moors who first began cultivating chufa grass in Spain and originated the refreshing drink Horchata de Chufa from its tuberous roots. It is a popular beverage across all of Spain, but particularly in Valencia, Murcia and Andalucía.
