- Hand-carved in Mexico
- Ideal for traditional Mexican hot chocolate
- Use by rubbing handles between palms
Pay homage to age-old tradition when you sip rich, hot chocolate frothed to perfection. Molinillos are ancient kitchen tools that have been used for centuries to mix drinking chocolate and create the revered foam on top. Our authentic, solid wood molinillos are carved by hand and crafted with artisan expertise.
By rubbing the handle of the molinillo between the palms of your hands with the base submerged in your cocoa, air is forced into the beverage creating the desired frothy effect. The resulting thick head of foam on your cup is a sign of authentic Mesoamerican drinking chocolate.
Hundreds of years ago, the Aztecs and Mayans enjoyed the magic of cacao, using it during ceremonies and sipping their famed drink, xocolatl. Cacao beans were combined with spices such as chilies, cinnamon and vanilla as well as seeds or maize for thickening. The beverage was agitated to create froth on top, which was the most treasured part of the drink. It has been said that Montezuma sipped chocolate foam from his golden chalice numerous times a day to boost his virility.
